TAPPING a beer can doesn’t stop it fizzing over when it is opened, mythbusting scientists have claimed.
In a boozy experiment researchers opened over 1,000 330-millilitre cans of Carlsberg, half of which had been shaken to resemble being transported on a bicycle.
It is widely thought that flicking or tapping a tinned can moves bubbles of carbon dioxide from the side to the top of the can so the drink won’t foam over when it is opened.
But scientists from the University of Southern Denmark, who set out to find the best way to minimise beer loss, found tapping the can has no effect at all.

Instead boffins recommended the best way to avoid beer loss from a shaken can is to let it settle before opening.
Elizaveta Sopina, from the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, said: “Tapping shaken beer cans does not prevent beer loss when the container is opened.
The only apparent remedy to avoid liquid loss is to wait for bubbles to settle before opening the can.”
